We are honored to accept the 2013 Expanding the Vision Grant through the Meals On Wheels Association of America and the Walmart Foundation. We will receive $94,439 toward reducing re-hospitalizations and improving care of recently discharged patients by providing meals within Tarrant County.

The target audience is recently discharged (within two weeks) hospital patients or emergency room patients age 60 or older residing in Tarrant County.  The average hospitalization cost within Tarrant County is $25,000.  If we meet the goal of reducing hospitalization of 60 clients within the service period, it could potentially save $1.5 million, which is a return on investment of 1,400%.

A Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County supporter who is an elementary school teacher spearheaded a fundraiser using these materials and raised more than $1,300 in only two weeks.  That’s nearly enough to feed one of our clients for an entire year!  She told us how easy it was to conduct this fundraiser and how much fun the students had.

The million dollars will be divided proportionately among all agencies complying with the rules.  Feinstein’s 14 past $1 million challenges to fight hunger have raised more than $1.25 billion for nonprofit agencies that help the hungry, including Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County.

Donors’ participation in this two-month campaign will make them partners in what Feinstein calls “the most successful ongoing effort ever to fight hunger.”  A full report of the results of the 2013 challenge will be posted at feinsteinfoundation.org in July.

Call Your Senators by Wednesday, April 24

My name is Carla Jutson, and I am the executive director of Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County. I do not like to use our blog to make political announcements, but I feel strongly that funding for Older American Act (OAA) programs has failed to keep pace with inflation or growth in our aging population.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has circulated a letter to his fellow Senators requesting their signatures in support of a request to Senate Appropriations Labor/HHS/Education Subcommittee leaders to increase funding support to OAA programs.

This is Sen. Sanders’ second time circulating such a letter. He notes that “in order for these vital programs just to catch up with the growth in the senior population and the increased costs of services over the past decade, the OAA budget would have to increase by at least 12 percent.” He also describes OAA programs as “cost-effective” and explains how investing in OAA initiatives can “save taxpayer dollars by reducing premature and costly Medicare and Medicaid expenditures.”

I hope you will consider urging Sen. Cornyn and Sen. Cruz to sign this letter to ensure it receives the strong support needed for the Subcommittee to take this request seriously.
